UPDATE! Devastating Flash Flooding in Central Texas

Central Texas experienced one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent U.S. history when torrential rains between July 4–7, 2025, triggered catastrophic flash flooding. The region, particularly around Kerr County and the Guadalupe River near Hunt, received more than 20 inches of rain in some areas. The Guadalupe River rose nearly 29 feet in under an hour, overwhelming communities with almost no time to react. Tragically, more than 100 people have died, including at least 30 children, and hundreds remain missing. A girls’ summer camp, Camp Mystic, was among the worst-hit, with over two dozen campers and staff confirmed dead.

Meteorologists attribute the flooding to a slow-moving mesoscale convective complex, intensified by tropical moisture from both the Gulf of Mexico and remnants of Tropical Storm Barry. Rainfall rates reached up to 4 inches per hour, causing widespread flash floods. The disaster underscores the dangers facing “Flash Flood Alley,” a region known for its rapid-onset floods. While the National Weather Service issued warnings several hours in advance, many rural areas lacked adequate infrastructure to receive or act on alerts. Kerr County, for example, had no flood warning sirens, and communication gaps may have contributed to the high casualty count.

Recovery efforts have mobilized hundreds of responders, including federal agencies, state officials, international volunteers, and local communities. Rescue operations using helicopters, boats, drones, and cadaver dogs are ongoing. As Texas confronts the aftermath, climate experts are warning that events like this will become more frequent and severe due to warming atmospheric conditions, which increase the likelihood of intense rainstorms. The disaster has ignited urgent calls to improve flood forecasting, infrastructure, and emergency preparedness in vulnerable regions.
