The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) has been elevated to its highest state of operational readiness, known as “State One Alert,” according to internal memos and reports from military sources. This mobilization of all active military personnel comes amid significantly rising geopolitical tensions in the Caribbean, particularly related to the neighboring Venezuelan crisis and the sustained United States military presence nearby.
The Call to Base: Highest Alert Level
On October 31, 2025, the TTDF issued an immediate order instructing all soldiers and Coast Guard officers to report to their respective bases.
- Order Details: The memo, reportedly circulated internally, specified a prompt return to barracks for active-duty personnel, including those on leave, and advised them to prepare for potential confinement. The measure was explicitly labeled “This is not a drill.”
- Response to Regional Uncertainty: Senior military sources described the activation as a “precautionary measure” designed to position the Defence Force on standby for any potential regional or national disturbances. The move aligns with earlier reports that TTDF personnel were preparing to shift from domestic aid and civil power operations to defensive and border-security roles.
- Government Stance: The Minister of Defence has reportedly declined to publicly confirm the order, citing the rule that a minister may decline to answer if publication would be contrary to the public interest, a posture that underscores the seriousness of the military situation.
Geopolitical Context: The Venezuelan Shadow
Trinidad and Tobago, an island nation located just 11 kilometers (7 miles) off the coast of Venezuela, is directly affected by the escalating crisis between the US and the Venezuelan government of Nicolรกs Maduro.
- US Military Activity: The mobilization follows a substantial and ongoing US naval buildup in the Caribbean, officially described as a counter-narcotics operation targeting criminal groups and “narco-terrorists.” Recent weeks have seen US military strikes against suspected drug-trafficking vessels in international waters, and US officials have hinted at the possibility of future strikes on land targets inside Venezuela.
- Direct US Presence: The tensions were heightened by the recent port call of a US guided-missile destroyer in Port of Spain for joint exercises, which Venezuela publicly denounced as a provocation.
- Security Threats: Trinidad’s heightened alert is seen as a preparation for possible fallout from a military conflict, including an anticipated increase in illegal migration and refugee flows across the border. Furthermore, the US Embassy in Port of Spain previously issued a security warning for its citizens due to a “heightened state of alert” based on potential threats linked to the US-Venezuela tensions.
The State One Alert level places the TTDF in a high state of readiness, positioning the nation to respond rapidly to any sudden deterioration of security in the region or on its own borders.
